I Too Have a Dream

“I have a dream”

This simple statement from such a man as Martin Luther King Jr. has resonated through history, still impacting us today.

Back then King was referring to the racial injustices suffered by blacks in America; now, these words resonate around the world, speaking to the continued systematic oppression of blacks, to the injustices committed against members of the LGBTQ+ community, to the struggles forced upon immigrants, to gender inequality, to the people living under dictatorships and communist regimes, to the inequities faced by millions on a day to day basis.

I too have a dream, that I may get to see a world in which we are all accepted because we are different and diverge from the norms imposed on us by society, that people in the LGBTQ+ community may get to enjoy the same rights and liberties as me, that blacks across the world will stop being judged for something so irrelevant as skin color, that countries may stop threatening each other with nukes and destruction, that we may all live in harmony, that the Earth may stop dying. My dream is to see that better tomorrow.

I know my dream is shared by thousands if not millions, or billions, but what do we do to make this a reality in a world where we are taught to fear our neighbor, where we are taught to be the submissive prey of those in higher power? The answer is not violence; it has been proved time and time again, violence will do nothing but weaken our resolve. We reach our goal together, we work for it as the community we are, as humans, then maybe someday the following will turn into a reality:

“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight”

Maybe, someday, all our metaphorical mountains and slopes will be a flat plane in which we gather and rejoice.
